Khan Steppe - Households
The Households of Khan Steppe
Altangerel
Bilguun tries to keep the local district running like clockwork, but his teenage son Temuulen is far more interested in horse racing than his homework. While Saruul manages the family shop and her garden, little Nominter is always dreaming up her next art project. Can this official family balance a modern desk job with the wild heart of the steppe, or will their guard dog Bono end up running the house?
Bat-Erdene
The Bat-Erdene family represents the cutting edge of modern life on the Eurasian steppe. Chinbat loves nothing more than the roar of his dirt bike engine and the wind in his hair as he tracks down stray livestock, while his tech-savvy wife, Solongo, utilizes high-speed satellite internet to run a thriving digital trade post right out of a traditional felt ger. Meanwhile, young Uuriintuya splits her time between her family's scenic highway camp and the local town boarding school. Can Erdene breed a new generation of champion horses while Solongo corners the global market on fine cashmere? Or will the rapid pace of the modern world disrupt their peaceful, off-grid lifestyle?
Bat-Ulzii
Operating a solitary repair shop on the desolate highway between districts requires ultimate self-reliance. Dash Bat-Ulzii spends his long days covered in grease, using his workbench to weld scrap pieces into strange mechanical contraptions while keeping the soum’s long-haul trucks running. With his fiercely loyal guard dog Banzar patrolling the remote perimeter to warn off wild steppe animals and late-night travellers, Dash is perfectly content out here in the middle of nowhere.
Boldbataar
Managing the busiest local shop and watering hole in the soum center is a full-time family operation. While the grandparents, Chuluun and Tsetsegmaa, keep the kitchen stocked with the best traditional meat pastries in the district, the parents, Ganbaatar and Khulan, handle the daily rush at the registers. Caught in the middle is their teenage son, Ochir, who splits his time between stocking heavy crates and listening to global music. Can this multi-generational business survive the harsh winter rush, or will too many cooks spoil the buuz?
Ganzorig
Managing single parenting takes incredible discipline, you could say military discipline. Danzan spends his days on duty in the military ranks, while his young son Tamir helps fetch firewood and water around the compound. To keep the home running smoothly, Danzan's sister, Bolor, has moved in to help manage the household and earn a steady income at the local school. With their loyal guard dog Khabar watching the perimeter and their clever cat Mumu keeping the mice at bay, this resilient family stands strong through every challenge.
Lkhagva
After spending forty brutal winters out on the open steppe managing hundreds of head of livestock, Baatar and Enkhtuya have finally decided it's time to slow down. Moving their fence line to the absolute edge of the soum center gives them the best of both worlds: a steady supply of electricity, easy access to hot water at the public bathhouse, and a cozy plot where they can look straight out across the horizon at their children’s distant herding camps. With a tiny government pension and Enkhtuya's famous homemade dried cheeses to sell at the market, this elderly couple is content. But can Baatar truly adapt to a life of leisure behind a town fence, or will the call of the open plains tempt him back into the saddle one last time?
Tayishi
Ask anyone in the soum, and they will tell you that the Tayishi family is the true backbone of the steppe. Led by the fierce and traditionally stubborn matriarch, Narantuya, this multi-generational household prides itself on keeping the ancient nomadic customs of the steppe alive. Batbayar is a legendary master horseman determined to train his son, Munkh-Orgil, into a Naadam racing champion, while Chimeg crafts gorgeous, authentic textiles to bring in extra Simoleons. With livestock to manage, elite racing horses to break, and a horde of protective guardian dogs to feed, the Tayishi camp is a whirlwind of daily labor. Can this tightly knit family maintain their heritage in a rapidly changing world, or will the modern temptations running down the highway split their traditional legacy apart?
The Market Commons
Running the town's busiest compound is a group effort for this tight-knit crew sharing a dual-ger yard. Sisters Enkhmaa and Garel Tumurbaatar do their best to keep things orderly, with Enkhmaa sharing the main residential ger alongside her boyfriend, Zorig Baljinnyam. But with Zorig's charming nature leading to a bit of a wandering eye, tension is brewing right under the lattice roof. Rounding out the main ger is handy roommate Gan-Ochir, while early-rising Naran claims the quiet kitchen ger to prep morning supplies. With loyal guard dog Chono watching over the shared yard, this busy group is always in the center of the town's action.
